What is advanced contact lens fitting?
Advanced contact lens practice is the field of optometry that designs and fits special contact lenses on a personalized basis. Unlike standard contact lenses, it comes in when there are complex prescriptions, irregular eye shapes or conditions where glasses or ordinary contact lenses do not offer a comfortable, safe or effective solution.
To achieve this, our optometrists rely on state-of-the-art technology such as biomicroscopy and corneal topography, which analyze the surface of the eye to make a completely custom lens, and on an analysis of your tear film. At Visionmar Optical Center we specialize in fitting contact lenses in complex cases.
When Is Advanced Contact Lens Fitting Needed?
Irregular corneas
Keratoconus, irregularities after refractive surgery or a corneal transplant, and scars from injuries or infections such as severe keratitis.
Myopia control in children
Night-time orthokeratology or daytime soft contact lenses with a specific design, depending on what suits the child and their lifestyle best.
Presbyopia
Premium multifocal contact lenses to see sharply far away, at intermediate distance and up close, without reaching for reading glasses.
High prescriptions
Very high myopia, hyperopia or astigmatism that cannot get good vision or stability from ordinary disposable contact lenses.
Irregular Corneas: When Glasses Are Not Enough
When the cornea is not symmetrical and smooth, neither glasses nor ordinary soft contact lenses can focus light properly. In these cases we fit contact lenses with a design specific to each condition, which usually improves the patient's quality of vision a great deal.
Keratoconus, for example, is a degenerative disease that deforms the cornea into a cone shape: the abnormal curve of the cornea greatly worsens the quality of vision and causes a significant loss of sight.
Cases we treat:
- Keratoconus and other corneal ectasias.
- Irregularities after refractive surgery or a corneal transplant.
- Scars from injuries or infections.
A Lens for Every Eye
We work with the best Spanish and international suppliers and manufacturers to offer our patients a wide range of solutions.
- 01
Orthokeratology (Ortho-K)
Rigid lenses worn while you sleep to reshape the cornea temporarily and reversibly: when you wake up you see well all day without glasses or contact lenses. It corrects myopia, astigmatism, hyperopia and even presbyopia, and is one of the most effective ways to control myopia.
- 02
Scleral lenses
Large rigid lenses that rest on the sclera, the white of the eye. The saline solution under the lens keeps the eye hydrated and bridges any corneal irregularity; they also treat severe dry eye and the discomfort of Sjögren's syndrome.
- 03
Hybrid lenses
A rigid center for perfectly sharp vision and a soft outer skirt with the comfort of a traditional contact lens.
- 04
Rigid gas-permeable lenses
Small lenses that float on the cornea's tear film, ideal for very high astigmatism or early-stage keratoconus.
- 05
Custom-made soft lenses
Made of hydrogel or silicone with exact curves and diameters that stock contact lenses do not come in, including designs for keratoconus and corneal ectasia.
